I would use this data analysis activity in first grade, but limit the shoe categories to laces, velcro, and neither. After placing their shoes on the graph I would have the children go back to their seats and copy the data onto a paper graph. CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.1.MD.C.4 Organize, represent, and interpret data with up to three categories; ask and answer questions about the total number of data points, how many in each category, and how many more or less are in one category than in another.

I would even ask the students how many stickers are next to some of the letters. I would ask about which color is the student's favorite. I would ask which letter had the most stickers connected to it, in this case there were a lot of 'N's and 'A's. (Clare)
This website has games that students can play if they're having difficulties with data analysis. There's also games on here that can work on smart boards or interactive boards, so you can use them with the whole class, not just individual students. http://www.topmarks.co.uk/maths-games/5-7-years/data-handling (Nicole)
